David de Gea is the Spanish football goalkeeper who currently plays for English Premier League side Manchester United. Aged just 20 and standing at over 6′4″, David de Gea is recognised to be one of the finest goalkeeping talents to emerge in recent seasons. He is widely tipped to succeed Iker Casillas in the role of being the captain for the Spanish national team.
David de Gea started his career with his hometown club Atletico Madrid, whom she also supports. David de Gea joined the youth ranks of Atletico Madrid when he was only 10 years old and it did not take long for him to progress through the ranks. He made his professional debut for the B team in 2008. He played in the B team for only one year before being promoted to the first team at the end of the 2009 season.
Despite being extremely young, a number of clubs were reportedly showing an interest in signing the youngster. However, David de Gea decided to sign with his hometown club. His debut for the first team came in the Champions League match against FC Porto, when he was only 18 years old. Even though he conceded two goals in the match, his talent was noticed by the club’s hierarchy, who also played him in the League match against Real Zaragoza.
Despite making his debut, it was not until the 2009-10 season that David de Gea was considered as a proper first-team player. He made 49 appearances in all competitions for the team during that season, which also once again brought him to the attention of various clubs across Europe. It was heavily rumoured that English Premier League side Manchester United were in the pole position to sign him. After the end of the European Under 21 championship, it was revealed that David de Gea had signed for Manchester United for a reported fee of around £18 million.
It made him one of the costliest goalkeepers around and he had been chosen to replace the retiring Edwin van Der Sar. David de Gea did not take long to nail down the first-team spot with Manchester United after he started in most of the pre-season friendlies at the start of the 2011 season. His competitive game for Manchester United came against archrivals Manchester City in the Community Shield.
However, it was a debut to forget for the youngster, who made errors, although Manchester United managed to win the match in the end. His League debut came in the match against West Brom, in which he was at fault once again. However, Manchester United recovered to win the match. His first clean sheet came in the 3-0 win over Tottenham. Even though David de Gea has not represented the senior Spanish national team, he has played in various Under 21 sides for Spain over the years.
He won the Europa League and the UEFA super cup with Atletico Madrid. His first trophy with Manchester United was the Community Shield.
